How it will work
Knowtank isn't out yet. This page describes the app we're building and says what isn't proven.
From photos to a map
- Describe the tank. Enter its size, then pick your light, its dimmer setting and your plants.
- Take a few photos. Three to six, guided by the app. Nothing goes in or on the tank: no tags, stickers or rulers.
- Check the map. The app proposes where the rocks, wood and plants sit. You fix what it got wrong.
- See the light. You get a map of how much light each zone receives, including the pockets shaded by wood, stone and other plants.
- Use it before you change something. Look at the map before you move a light or replant a corner.
How it labels what it tells you
Every number carries one of three labels.
- Measured: it came from a reading you supplied, such as a PAR meter.
- Computed: it was worked out from your tank, your light and the map.
- Inferred: it's a judgment from the photos.
Where it can't tell, it says unknown. A confident wrong answer costs more than a gap.
What isn't proven yet
Comparing photos across days. Reporting what changed depends on lining up photos taken on different days. That doesn't work reliably yet.
Questions
When will it be out?
There's no date. Leave your email and we'll tell you.
What will it cost?
We haven't decided.
Which tanks will it work on?
The aim is any rectangular tank.
Do I need a PAR meter?
No. A reading makes the map more accurate, but you won't need one.
Is it coming to Android?
iPhone comes first. We haven't planned past that.
What happens to my photos?
Nothing yet, because there's no app. The only thing we hold is your email. We'll say how photos are handled before the app asks for any.
